The technical name of the material is PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) or more commonly methacrylate.

The best quality PMMA sheets is certainly obtained by casting an acrylic "syrup" obtained by polymerizing MMA monomer in a reactor; In simple terms, the starting material is liquid and to obtain the sheets or blocks from which the spheres will then be made, a small amount of catalyst is added which starts the solidification reaction. 

The amount of catalyst used therefore becomes the determining factor for the transparency of the final product. To reduce costs, some manufacturers increase the amount of catalyst with the intention of accelerating the reaction. The result is therefore a block obtained in many fewer hours but which on the other hand loses transparency since the mixture is much richer in catalyst and therefore less crystalline.
