The technical name of the material is PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) or more commonly methacrylate.

The best quality of PMMA sheets is certainly obtained by casting an acrylic "syrup" obtained by polymerizing the MMA monomer in a reactor; In simple terms, the starting material is liquid and to obtain the sheets or blocks from which the spheres will then be made, a small amount of catalyst is added that starts the solidification reaction. 

The amount of catalyst used therefore becomes the determining factor for the transparency of the final product. To reduce costs, some manufacturers increase the amount of catalyst in an attempt to accelerate the reaction. The result is therefore a block obtained in many fewer hours but which in turn loses transparency since the mixture is much richer in catalyst and therefore less crystalline.
